How to make an iPhone ringtone without iTunes
iTunes is gone on the Mac and optional on Windows, but you can still put any song on your iPhone as a ringtone. First make a short clip in the right format — the Glowtrack Studio ringtone maker picks the catchiest 30 seconds for you and saves it as an iPhone .m4r file — then add it to the phone using one of the three methods below.

What an iPhone ringtone needs
- Format: an .m4r file — AAC audio in an MP4 container, the same as .m4a with a different extension.
- Length: 40 seconds at most. Around 30 seconds is the usual choice; the phone loops it while it rings.
- Rights: use a song you own or have permission to use. Purchased songs, your own music and royalty-free tracks are all fine for a personal ringtone.
Three ways to add it
- Mac (Finder): connect your iPhone with a cable, select it in the Finder sidebar, and drag the .m4r file onto the iPhone’s window. It syncs straight into Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
- Windows (Apple Devices app or iTunes): connect the iPhone, select it in the app, and drag the .m4r file onto the device. Menu names vary a little between versions.
- No computer (GarageBand): download the MP3 version instead, save it to the Files app, open GarageBand on the iPhone, start an Audio Recorder project, import the file from the loop browser’s Files tab, then go to My Songs, press and hold the project and choose Share → Ringtone.
Step by step
- Open the Glowtrack Studio ringtone maker and drop in your song (MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC or even a video).
- The loudest, most energetic 30 seconds are selected automatically. Drag the highlighted area to move it, or drag its edges to change the length, and press Preview.
- Keep “iPhone ringtone (M4R)” selected and press Convert, then Download.
- Add the file with Finder (Mac), the Apple Devices app (Windows) or GarageBand (iPhone only), as above.
- On the iPhone, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and pick your new tone. You can also assign it to a single contact.

Questions
Why doesn’t my ringtone show up?
Check that the file ends in .m4r and is no longer than 40 seconds. If you used Finder or the Apple Devices app, make sure the sync finished before unplugging.
Can I make a text or notification tone?
Yes. Trim the selection to a few seconds before converting, then choose it under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Text Tone.
Is the ringtone maker free?
Yes — free, no sign-up and no watermark. Your song is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
