App icon sizes for iOS, Android and the web

One app needs a surprising number of icons. The good news is that they all come from one square master image. Here is what each platform expects, and how to generate the whole set in one go.

iOS

App Store icon: 1024 × 1024 pixels, square, no transparency (an alpha channel can get the upload rejected) and no rounded corners — iOS applies the mask.
Xcode 14 and later: can use a single 1024 × 1024 image for the whole app icon set.
Older projects: need the full set from 20 pt to 83.5 pt at @1x, @2x and @3x — 40 to 180 pixels for iPhone, plus 76 and 167 pixels for iPad.

Android

Adaptive icons (Android 8+): two layers, background and foreground, each 108 × 108 dp. Only the centre 66 dp circle is guaranteed visible, because launchers crop to circles, squircles or rounded squares.
Legacy launcher icons: 48 dp, supplied at five densities — 48, 72, 96, 144 and 192 pixels.
Google Play icon: 512 × 512 pixels, 32-bit PNG, sRGB, up to 1024 KB. Supply it square — Google Play rounds the corners and adds the shadow itself.

Web

favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 pixel sizes for browser tabs.
apple-touch-icon.png at 180 × 180 for iPhone home screens.
192 and 512 pixel icons plus a maskable 512 version for installable web apps (PWAs), listed in a web manifest.

Step by step

Open the Glowtrack Studio app icon generator and upload a square PNG or SVG of at least 1024 pixels — or type a letter or emoji to design one.
Pick a background colour or gradient; it fills behind transparent artwork on iOS and becomes the Android adaptive background.

Questions

Should I round the corners of my icon?

No. Supply square artwork; iOS, Android launchers and Google Play all apply their own corner masks.

Can my iOS icon be transparent?

No. App Store icons must be fully opaque, and an alpha channel can cause a rejection. The generator saves the iOS icons without one.

Why is my logo cut off on Android?

Adaptive icons are cropped to the launcher’s shape. Keep the important part inside the centre two-thirds — the generator scales artwork into that safe zone automatically.
