Better than a basic cut-out
About the AI model
The background removal on this page is done by IS-Net (general-use), an open-source AI model from the DIS project by Xuebin Qin and colleagues, released under the Apache 2.0 licence. We didn’t create or train it, and we’re not affiliated with its authors — we run their published model in your browser, and added the touch-up brush, edge refinement, backgrounds, effects and the graphic / logo mode around it.
Like any AI model, it does better on some photos than others. It’s strongest on a clear subject — people, pets, products, cars — and can struggle with low contrast (dark clothes on a dark background, white on white), see-through things (glass, veils, smoke) and flat artwork, which is why graphics with a solid background are cut out by colour instead. If a part comes out see-through or a bit of background is left behind, paint over it with Restore or Erase.

FAQ
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The AI model downloads to your browser once and then runs on your own device. Your photos are never sent anywhere.
Is it really free at full resolution?
Yes. There are no credits, limits or paid HD downloads — the transparent PNG is the full size of your photo (very large photos are scaled to 6000 pixels on the longest side). The site is supported by the ads on the page.
Why is there a download the first time?
The AI model is about 90 MB. It downloads once and is saved by your browser, so next time it starts straight away — on Wi-Fi is best for the first go on a phone.
Best quality or faster?
Best quality looks at your photo in more detail, giving the cleanest edges on hair, fur and complex shapes. Faster uses a quarter of the memory and time, so it’s the default on phones — and it’s still very good for portraits, pets and product shots.
Does it work on logos, cartoons and vector art?
Yes — flat artwork with a solid background is detected automatically and cut out by colour instead of AI, which gives crisp, exact edges. You can switch to Graphic / logo yourself, pick the background colour from the image, adjust the tolerance, and choose whether to remove that colour inside shapes too (like the middle of a letter O).
Why did part of my photo turn see-through?
The AI wasn’t sure whether that part belonged to the subject — usually where it has a similar colour or brightness to the background, like dark clothes against a dark wall. Choose Restore and paint over it, or try a photo with more contrast between the subject and the background.
How do I fix bits the AI missed?
Choose Erase and paint over leftover background, or Restore to paint back parts that were removed. Hold Ctrl and scroll to zoom in, and press Ctrl + Z to undo.
How do I make a transparent PNG?
Leave the background on Transparent and download as PNG or WebP. JPG can’t be transparent, so it gets a white background.
Can I use it for product photos?
Yes — remove the background, pick white or a soft colour, add a drop shadow, and tick “Crop to the subject” for a clean catalogue shot.
Which browser is best?
Chrome or Edge on a computer use your graphics card and are fastest. Safari and Firefox work too, a little slower.
